A Special Tribute to Prince

The Tavis Smiley Show pays tribute to Prince, who passed away unexpectedly at the age of 57 on April 21. Born Prince Rogers Nelson, he burst onto the music scene in the 1970s. He had many top ten hits for himself, and other artists, including Chaka Khan and Sinead O’Connor. During his over 35 year-long career, he won multiple Grammys and an Oscar for his work on Purple Rain. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004.
The world’s reaction to his death was immediate and sizeable; notable figures shared their messages of grief. International landmarks, like Niagra Falls and the Eiffel Tower in France were lit purple to honor the legendary musician’s life and work. In our hour-long tribute, we replay two interviews with Prince, in which he talks about his performance with Beyonce, his childhood, his approach to politics, reflections on friendship and more.
