The common narrative on the relationship between African Americans and Chicanos in Los Angeles is that they are always at odds. But in her new book, “Spaces of Conflict, Sounds of Solidarity: Music, Race, and Spatial Entitlement in Los Angeles”, Gaye Theresa Johnson, associate professor of Black Studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara, challenges this depiction by examining the methods African Americans and Chicanos have traditionally used to challenge institutional repression and forge solidarity. She joins us to discuss the text.
