"Making America as good as its promise" was the theme of this year's tenth anniversary edition of the State of The Black Union held the last weekend in February in Los Angeles, and hosted by Tavis Smiley. The nation's premier Black thought leaders come together for a rich conversation about the issues affecting our community. Amid these treacherous economic times, speakers this year put a special focus on ways to ensure an economic recovery includes ALL Americans. In the first hour, we listen in to a conversation moderated by lawyer Raymond Brown, with insight from Professor Michael Eric Dyson, Urban League President Marc Morial, "The Hip Hop" Professor Tricia Rose, Rev. Jesse Jackson Sr., Professor Charles Ogletree, and author Iyanla Vanzant.

We continue with the second hour of our special broadcast of highlights from this year's tenth anniversary edition of the State of the Black Union, recorded late last month at the Los Angeles Convention Center. In this year of monumental change, and monumental uncertainty, the theme was "Making America as good as its promise." In the second hour, we hear portions of a conversation Tavis moderated including Legal Scholar Lani Guinier, Green for All President Van Jones, Psychologist Na'im Akbar, Dr. Julianne Malveaux, TransAfrica founder Randall Robinson, California State Assembly Speaker Karen Bass, Dr. Cornel West, Rev.
